Seiichi Tsuchiya is a stone sculptor residing in Kanaya, Shimada City, Shizuoka Prefecture.
He is one of the few in Japan who preserves the technique of "completely hand-carved" sculptures, carving stone Jizo statues solely with chisels and setou (a traditional carving tool). Additionally, he creates works that incorporate natural shapes by utilizing driftwood and stones collected from the sea, adding subtle touches to the natural forms.
He primarily exhibits his work through solo exhibitions and has also participated in shows both domestically and internationally. His pieces are cherished as symbols of prayer and healing, and they are especially popular among women, young people, and audiences overseas.
Currently, he is also experimenting with micro rotary tools to create stone pebble sculptures.
Main features:
Hand-carving technique: Using chisels and setou to craft warm, handcrafted Jizo statues.
Harmony with nature: Incorporating driftwood and stones to highlight the natural beauty of materials.
International perspective: Having exhibited abroad, he promotes Japanese craftsmanship to the world.
His works blend traditional Japanese techniques with modern sensibilities, resulting in unique and captivating pieces.
